THE SILENT SERVICE

It's 1217 hours Zulu (2:17am local time). You stood the evening watch and were properly relieved at 1058 Zulu (nice guy). You went below for some "good" midrats (midnight rations), your usual Navy issue Hollywood movie in Crew's Mess, a little jawing with the night baker, a quick "du-shay" and then some well deserved rack time (sleep). But there's noise - what's that crazy alarm noise? GENERAL QUARTERS - Man Battle Stations Missile! You're up in just a little less than a flash (why does this always happen when you are sound asleep and that yummy Sandra Bernhart has just given you her come hither look?) and manning your Battle Station in the Control Room. The Skipper had already relieved the Officer of the Deck and when you entered he was barking orders in his confident, measured voice. He's placing his boat in position to hover and launch. You and the others of your crew have brought one of an elite group - the most formidable killing machines ever devised by man - to this spot in the ocean for a reason; and that reason is to deter any one or thing from harming YOU, your LOVED ONES or denying YOU your constitutionally guaranteed way of life in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The crew will use any or all means authorized by the Commander in Chief (President) to manifest a swift, dominant, complete (albeit bitter) victory. Now comes the waiting - along with the practiced routine and tension of Battle Stations. You won't know if this is a drill or if it is the end of life as you've known it until launch time, which is by now very near.

Oh, sorry - it is ninety-nine point nine percent utter boredom and one-tenth of one percent sheer, absolute, unadulterated, "I knew I was gonna die" terror at unexpected intervals.
